New Evidence Shows Fracture and ACL Prevention Programs are Essential Before, During and After Your Season

Science Daily (Nov 16,2012) Nearly 8 million U.S. high school students participate in sports every year. Now, the focus is not on just winning but on something just as important-their health. New research from the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC) shows fracture and ACL prevention programs are ESSENTIAL in ensuring injuries don’t sideline players.
The cost of fractures, which account for more than 10 percent of all high school sports injuries can severely impact athletes physically, emotionally, and financially. Currently, one in 40 to 100 athletes suffer from ACL injuries, a condition that typically costs $25,000 in treatment and side lines athletes anywhere from six to 12 months. The risk of secondary ACL injury rises an average of one in four or five.
According to Timothy Hewett, PhD , director of research in Sports Medicine at the Sports Health and Performance Institute at OSU, “By participating in a prevention program before, during, and after the sports season , high school and college athletes can reduce their risk of first-time ACL injuries by 60 to 70 percent.” A comprehensive program should include an emphasis on injury preventing exercises.
ICON Performance’s Fracture and ACL Prevention program includes specific assessment and testing to flag muscle/hamstring imbalance, force absorption ability, exercises focusing on VMO stabilization, hip mobility, hamstring flexibility, ankle mobility, and perfecting squat and deadlift patterns-all of our workouts are completely customized to address the athletes’ individual needs.
